Objective: Cefpodoxime is an third generation cephalosporin antibiotioc. The aim of the present research work was to develop and evaluate enteric-coated sustained-release beads of sodium alginate and badam gum, loaded with cefpodoxime for oral drug delivery.
Methods: The micro beads were prepared by ionotropic external gelation method using badam gum, low viscosity sodium alginate, and calcium chloride as the cross linker. Eudragit L-100 which is enteric-coated polymer was found to defend the product against acidic stomach conditions. For the drug and polymer interaction, the FTIR studies were done. The evaluation parameters carried out for the prepared microbeads includes entrapment efficiency, swellability studies, morphological (SEM) characterization of beads and drug release kinetics.
Results: The in-vitro drug release showed that the gastric fluid is stimulated at pH 1.2 and also stimulated at the intestinal pH of 6.8. The thermal stability of the formulations have been demonstrated using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA).
Conclusion: FTIR shows there were no chemical interactions. The SEM and AFM confirmed the average roughness. TGA proves the thermal stability. It was concluded that the formulation showed sustained release behaviour in Gastric and intestinal pH.
