Evaluation of Hair Growth Promoting Activity of Sansevieria Trifasciata P. on Alopecia Androgenic Rabbit Male

Author: HENNY KASMAWATI, RESMI MUSTARICHIE, ELI HALIMAH, RUSLIN
Abstract: This study aims to determine the potential and effectiveness of Sansevieria trifasciata P. in stimulating hair growth. This study was designed to know the hair growth activity of ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate, and water fraction of S. trifasciata P. (concentration 20%, respectively) topical administration. The modified Tanaka method was used to assess male rabbits' hair growth length (n = 5). The dorsal skin was completely denuted to remove hair. The modified Matias method was used to assess the microscopic image of rabbit skin tissue, hair follicle proportion, and the telogen anagen ratio (A/T) using male rabbits (n = 3) induced by dihydrotestosterone hormone (DHT) for 21 days. Minoxidil solution (2%) was applied topically as standard. The group was given topical ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate, and distilled water fraction can nourish hair significantly, and the effectiveness same with minoxidil to promote hairgrowth. The best hair growth length found in the group given ethyl acetate fraction (2.07 cm ± 0.06). Subsequent test results using rabbits induced alopecia for 21 days showed hair regrowth as reflected hair follicles proportion, the A/T ratio, and profil of dorsal tissue's microscopic. Hair regrowth at the shaved site of the ethyl acetate group, showed a proliferation hair follicles with the amount of anagen (terminal hair) more higher than the telogen (hair miniaturization. The ethyl acetate fraction of Sansevieria trifasciata P. (20%) showed better activity in hair growth.
