Pre and Postnatal Developmental Study of Cornea and lens in Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

Author: AZHAR SALEEM KHALAF, EKTIFFA S. KHAYOON, ALI FARIS RESHAG
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to characterize the histological developmental changes of cornea and lens tissue at 20 day old fetus and (5,10,15) day old rabbit pups. In 20 day old embryo the inner layer of cornea was formed of one layer of endothelial cells, it was flat cell with dark stained elongated nucleus .The stroma consisted of keratocytes and collagen fibers run in parallel pattern , the collagen fibers made wavy appearance with wide spaces in-between. The epithelia consisted of one layer of cuboidal cells with dark stained round nucleus .At (5)day old pups, the epithelia of the cornea consisted of two cell layers ,the surface of thin cell that rested on cuboidal cells which formed the basal cell layer, the keratocytes and the collagen fibers appeared more regular, no spaces were noticed. At (10-15) day old pups the epithelium of cornea consisted of three layer. At 20 days old pups the lines consisted of outer a cellular capsule ,underneath the epithelial zone was noticed ,which consisted of many cell layers. The nucleus of this cells were round to oval in shape and light basophilic stained. The cells in the center were elongated with elongated dark basophilic nucleus. At(5-10) day old pups the center cells were like fibers and the nucleus were disappeared. At the age of 15 days the lens center zone (lense nucleus) formed.
