Background: Dexamethasone is a routinely prescribed drug for multiple and serious conditions. Thus, the quantification of such drug is of well-known importance. The standard addition method is commonly used in the drugs quantification. The main goal of this study is to perform a rapid, easy, inexpensive, and robust method for the evaluation of dexamethasone sodium phosphate in variant pharmaceutical preparations using the well-established standard addition method and the globally trusted UV-Vis spectroscopy.
Methods: Three selected pharmaceutical preparations of dexamethasone were tested. This encompasses: tablets, ampules, and ophthalmic solutions. The diluted samples were spiked with the dexamethasone standards and the tested within the UV-Vis techniques.
Results: The results showed well-correlated standard curves for the dexamethasone tablets, ampules, and eye drops. The correlation coefficients were found 0.9967, 0.9998, 0.9994, respectively. The percent contents for the three dosage forms were found to be 96%, 100.75%, and 101% for the tablets, ampules, eye drops, respectively.
Conclusion: The researchers concluded that the standard addition protocol can be used confidently to determine the contents of dexamethasone sodium phosphate in different dosage forms.
