Reactive molecules like free radicals are included in physiological processes and are linked to various diseases, like cancer, arthritis and liver injury. Exploring elements through free radical, scavenging and or antioxidant activity is of great importance. This research was intended to assess the free radical scavenging activity of Simarouba glauca leaves extracts. Simarouba glauca has gained much consideration in recent times and is well-known as “Paradise tree”. For various ailments it has been used since time immemorable. Leaves were collected, shade dried, and extracted with water and absolute ethanol. Quantification of phenols and flavonoids has been done. Extracts at 100,200,300,400,500µg/ml concentrations were used; ascorbic acid was used as the standard. Radical scavenging activity in terms of inhibition percentage and IC50 was also calculated. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl hydroxyl (DPPH) quenching assay, was selected for this experiment.
The aqueous and ethanol extracts content of total phenolic compounds is 8.69±0.09 and 20.52±0.19 mg/g GAE and total flavonoid recorded 28.57±0.03 and 50.57±0.07 mg (Rutin)/ g respectively. The study revealed that ethanol extract contained more phenolic compounds and ethanol extract had flavonoid content nearly twice that of the aqueous extract. The aqueous and ethanol extract indicated maximum scavenging activity of 71% and 86.2% at 500µg/mL respectively. This study reports revealed that leaves of Simarouba glauca shows good radical scavenging activity which is a result of flavonoids and phenols presence in high level.
