The fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) is associated with obesity. Some studies showed that there was an effect of FTO gene variants on the development of T2DM. This study showed the effect of FTO gene polymorphisms (rs9940128 & rs11076023) on the risk development of T2DM in Iraqi obese population.
Methods: A case-control study in which the studied groups consisted of 400 T2DM obese and 400 healthy obese.
Results: rs9940128 SNP was associated with the development of T2DM in Iraqi obese G allele in rs9940128 was significantly higher (P=0.0001) in T2DM than that of the control obese group. The (GG) had 3 time risk (OR=3.03) in the development of T2DM with those of wild type (AA) after adjustment for age, sex and BMI. There was no significant association between the two groups in regard to the rs11076023 SNP. In the relation to the phenotypic data the rs9940128 SNP was significantly associated with increased BMI, insulin and with decreased HDL. rs11076023 was significantly associated with plasma insulin and HOMA- IR.
Conclusion: The FTO gene polymorphisms (rs9940128) associated with high risk T2DM susceptibility in obese Iraqi populations, while there was no association in regarding to rs11076023 SNP
