Knowledge and awareness of brushing habits among leprosy patients

Abstract: Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic, curable infectious disease mainly causing skin lesions and nerve damage. Given the diversity of its clinical, dermatological and neurological symptoms and its slow evolution, leprosy may lead to disabilities and physical deformities, particularly in cases of delayed diagnosis or inappropriate treatment Aim: This study was done with the objective of assessing the present knowledge and awareness of brushing habits among leprosy patients Materials and methods: This survey was carried among 30 people ,17 men and 13 women who suffered from leprosy, living in a colony in Chennai, India using a questionnaire.The questionnaire was administered to them manually .The questionnaire comprised of 10 questions which involved personal oral hygiene.The results were collected and analysed using excel sheet and metachart for the pie charts. Result: The data was analyzed and has been tabulated along with charts for each question.57 % of them who took the questionnaire were men and the rest 43% were women . When asked if they used a tooth brush, the results show that the majority(70 %) use a tooth brush, while 30% do not use a tooth brush .Majority of them (70%) practice brushing with tooth brush, only (2%) use neem stick for brushing their teeth.. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained from this survey,the particular colony of leprosy patients have extremely low awareness on the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and the relevance of brushing habits.
