A prospective screening of anti-inflammatory activity of mono herbal formulations of curcuma zedoria

Author: MADAN L KAUSHIK, JAI PARKASH KADIAN, BHUPENDRA CHAUHAN, ANIRUDDH DEV SINGH
Abstract: The mono herbal formulations i.e. MHF-A, MHF-B, MHF-C & MHF-D were evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity in rats. The acute models of inflammation, i.e. carrageenan and histamine-induced rat paw edema were used for the study at dose 200 mg/kg, p.o. In our previous study indicated that petroleum ether, chloroform and ethanol root extracts of Curcuma zedoaria showed the significant anti-inflammatory results. The formulations MHF-A, MHF-B, MHF-C and MHF-D were prepared by using C. zedoaria extracts having potential activity. The formulations were developed through standard procedure. Thereafter, the 200 mg/kg doses have been selected for each formulation to perform the anti-inflammatory activity. The paw volume was measured by using a Digital plethysmometer. The anti-inflammatory activity was indicated by a significant reduction in the paw edema and was observed in indomethacin and mono herbal formulations, MHF-A, MHF-B, MHF-C and MHF-D, from first hours to last hours of study. The MHF-B was found less effective as compared to other formulations. The anti-inflammatory activity of other three formulations has significant results which are comparable to that of the standard drug i.e. indomethacin in both experimental models.
