Sargassum is genus of brown macro algae or seaweed belongs to the family of Sargassaceae. This seaweed is well represented by about 16 species. This contains many essential compounds such as proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, enzymes, vitamins, polysaccharides and fatty acids. Now the commercial cultivation of Sargassum was primarily used for alginate production. Sargassum species can absorb various heavy metals effectively to protect the marine environment. These plants are a source of food, fodder, medicinal products, cosmetics, fertilizer and also are used for industrial agar and alginate production. Its recent use increases in poultry because of its nutritive value. Sargassum shows the following pharmacological activities like anticancer activity, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, larvicidal, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, antiulcer, wound healing, vermifuge and anticoagulant activities. Information of traditional usage, chemical constituents & selected pharmacological activities of the seaweed were gathered from available literature to frame the review. The aim of the present review is to define the phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of Sargassum which will help the researchers to frame further quality research on.
