The Effect of Giving Rice Bran Milk on Blood Glucose Levels and Body Weight in Hyperglycemic Primary School Teachers in Makassar City

Abstract: This study aims to determine the effect of rice bran milk on fasting blood glucose levels and body weight of primary school teachers in Makassar City. This study was quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest with control group design. The population is all primary school teachers in Makassar City who have abdominal circumference > 80 cm for woman and >90 for men. The samples are those who meet the inclusion criteria who had fasting blood glucose levels >100 mg/dL, do not consume drugs. Sample selected then randomly divided in to experimental and control group, each group consist of 12 participants. Provision of rice bran milk was given once a day (30 gram) and nutritional education for one month for experimental group and only nutritional education once a day through WhatsApp media for the control group. Blood Glucose level, body weight and 24H dietary recall was reported before and after study both for experiment and control groups. The data were analyzed by paired t-test and experimental independent samples t-test, using SPSS. The results of this study showed that, in experimental group, the fasting blood glucose level reduced significantly (p<0.05) but increased in the control group after intervention there were also a significance differences between fasting blood glucose level in experimental and control group (p<0.05). There were a significance differences between body weight before and after intervention in intervention group (p<0.05) but not in control group and there were also a significance differences of body weight between experimental and control groups at posttest. Conclusion, rice bran milk can be used as nutritional supplements for the control of hyperglycemia and body weight of overweight and diabetic individuals.
