Abstract: Atherosclerosis is a complex process based on immunological mechanism involve neoangiogenesis and inflammation. VEGF-ß is important in angiogenesis while MMP-8 in inflammation. Euphorbia milii (E. milii) flower and propolis have been proven to be immunomodulators in mice infected with M.tb. This study aims to determine role of combination tea from E. milii flowers and propolis (EMP) in preventing atherosclerosis through VEGF-ß and MMP-8 pathways. The study was experimental research on 28 male Wistar rats, 100-200 grams (g) of body weight (bw), divided into 4 groups (K0, P1, P2, and P3). After 1 week of adaptation, K0 was given standard feed; P1 with standard feed and EMP tea 40 mg/ 100 g.bw/ day; P2 received high-fat diet (HFD) 2 g/ 200 g.bw/ day; P3 received HFD 2 g/ 200 g.bw/ day and EMP tea 40 mg / 100 g.bw/ day. The treatment for 30 days and on 31st day the MMP-8 and VEGF-ß serum were examined with ELISA technique while total cholesterol with Erba XL 100 procedure. Results shows the decreases secretion of MMP-8 and total cholesterol levels in group with HFD and give EMP tea (17.45±0.91 ng/dl and 77.83±6.55 mg/dl) but does not in VEGF-ß secretion (p> 0.05). We concluded that the EMP combination tea at a dose 40 mg/ 100 g.bw for 30 days was able to reduce the secretion of MMP-8 and total cholesterol in rats given HFD.
