Development and Evaluation of Ferulic Acid Loaded Chitosan Gel for Wound Healing

Author: FATHIMA SAFA PA, SHONA SARA SHAJI, NAVAMIMRAJAN NAMBIAR, RAKHI RAJU, PRATIK, ANUPRIYA MAHESH
Abstract: Wound is characterized as the interruption of cell and anatomic progression of tissue. The natural remedy for the wound healing is better than the synthetic drug; ferulic acid is the constituent present in moringa leaves and seeds of oats, rice and wheat plant. So it shows fewer side effects, and has antioxidant property due the presence of phenolic ring. It can donate the hydrogen from the phenolic hydroxyl group and can neutralize the free radicals. A transdermal system has more advantages when compared with oral route in long term therapy. It can sidestep the primary pass digestion, managing drug discharge, can keep up a consistent and delayed medication level in plasma and can limit intra and bury subject inconstancies. In this examination, we endeavoured to define a steady and straightforward ferulic corrosive stacked chitosan based gel to satisfy the strength and viability of ferulic corrosive. We developed four formulations of different concentration of ferulic acid. Spread ability, viscosity, extrudability, pH, drug content, drug releases, antioxidant and anti-microbial properties were checked and 39µg/ml of formulated gel produces anti-oxidant activity. Formulation F4 shows good anti-microbial property against the gram negative bacteria (zone of inhibition 5mm) and moderate antimicrobial property against the gram positive bacteria (zone ofinhibition3mm). From the result it was concluded that F4 showed better result when compared to other formulation of ferulic acid and also very effective for treating wound. F4 can be considered as a new class of drug delivery system which improves stability and efficacy.
