In vitro evaluation of antimicrobial activity and estimation of Epicatechin from the fruit extract of Prunus armeniaca L using HPTLC technique

Author: LAKSHMI THANGAVELU
Abstract: Introduction: In current era, modern science and drug development and the need to find new cures reignited interest in some of the ancient traditions as well as to explore the rapidly expanding field of phyto-pharmacology and phyto-chemistry in addition to current developments in modern medical science. Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L) so named by Romans is a very delightful and healthy fruit that provides a number of health benefits. The present study is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and estimation of Epicatechin from the fruit extract of Prunus armeniaca L using HPTLC technique Aim: In this study, we have made an attempt to estimate Epicatechin present in the Prunus armeniaca fruit extract by HPLC technique and also to screen the antibacterial activity as it is known for its therapeutic benefits . Materials and methods: The Prunus armeniaca fruit extract was chromatographed on silica gel GF254 plates with Toluene: EA: FA: MeOH (3: 3: 0.4: 0.1) as mobile phase for epicatechin estimation. Detection and quantification were performed by densitrometric scanning,at 280 nm. The anti bacterial activity was screened using disc diffusion technique and the zone of inhibition was measured in mm diameter. Result: The extract showed significant antibacterial activity against the bacterial strains tested. The average recovery of Epicatechin was found to be 0.81 %. The HPTLC technique has provided a good resolution of Epicatechin from other constituents present in the ethanolic extract.
