Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the antisecretory effect of Centella asiatica leaves ethanolic extract against pyloric ligation induced gastric ulcers on rats.
Methods: Total of 35 animals was grouped randomly into 7 groups i.e. normal control, ulcer control, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) as vehicle control, ranitidine 27 mg/kg BW as positive control and 3 doses of the extract. All the groups pre-treated for 7 days. The animals were starved for 48 hours having access to water before the pyloric ligation. After 19 hours the animals were sacrificed and the stomach part was isolated for examination of macroscopic parameters, histology and gastric fluid secretion.
Results: The results showed C. asiatica leaves ethanolic extract doses of 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg BW has antisecretory effect against pyloric ligation induced ulcers. There was a significant difference between extract dose of 800 mg/kg bw with ulcer control group in ulcer index, volume and pH of gastric secretion, and mucus index. The extract doses of 400 and 800 mg/kg BW possessed ulcer inhibition with percentage 88.77±2.62%, and 93.415±2.92%, respectively.
Conclusion: The results suggested that C. asiatica leaves ethanolic extract showed an antisecretory effect against pyloric ligation induced gastric ulcers in rats.
