A Prospective Study Of Drug Utilization Pattern Among Paediatrics And Analysing Who Prescribing Indicators In A South Indian Government District Headquarters Hospital

Abstract: Objectives: The study aims to know about drug utilization pattern among paediatric patients admitted in a government headquarters hospital. It also analyses the prescriptions of those patients using WHO’s core prescribing indicators. Methods: This is a prospective observational study involving 159 paediatric patients. It was a six month study conducted between September 2019 and March 2020. Relevant information for analysis were obtained through accessing case sheets of patients. Results: Majority of paediatric patients were chidren (54.72%). There was a male preponderance (58%) Most patients were admitted for the treatment of infectious diseases (72.96%). Total number of drugs prescribed was 844. Out of them 791 drugs were prescribed in generic name (93.72%). The average number of drugs per prescription was found to be five. Majority of prescriptions contain one antibiotic (47.80%). Polypharmacy issue was detected in 111 prescriptions out of 159 prescriptions (69.81%).Conclusion: This study will promote rational use of drugs among patients and health care professionals and thus pave a way to minimize medication errors.
