Inflammation is generally considered a double-edged sword. It is a protective response of the body against a noxious stimulus where different classes of cells are involved in combating the insult to the body. However, sometimes overt inflammation itself can lead to excessive tissue damage than the original insult. To overcome this deleterious effect of inflammation, the body produces various anti-inflammatory and restitution promoting molecules to safeguard the mucosal tissues from damage. These molecules also serve as biomarkers for disease detection and treatment. Three such novel molecules described here are the Trefoil factors. Trefoil peptides help in mucosal restitution, faster wound healing and also function as anti-apoptotic peptides. This literature review aims at highlighting the various beneficial effects of trefoils and their role in inflammatory diseases of the body and also emphasizing the importance and role of trefoil factors in periodontal disease.
