The Successful treatment of acquired Severe Aplastic Anemia with Autologous Cord Blood Transplantation: case report and literature review

Author: GHOLAMREZA BAHOUSH, ZAHRA SOHEILIRAD, JAVAD BALASI
Abstract: Here we report a 5-year-old male diagnosed with acquired Severe Aplastic anemia (SAA) who underwent the first successful autologous cord blood transplant in Iran. Due to an ongoing requirement for transfusion support and the lack of a sibling donor we decided to do hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) by using an autologous cord blood unit your own patient was found to be available in the private cord blood bank. Surprisingly platelet engraftment was occurred four weeks after infusing the cells. He is well completely for clinical and hematologic view 12 weeks after doing transplant and this remained stable until now (48 months after HSCT) despite Sandimmune discontinuation completely. These findings suggest that for the patient with a diagnosis of acquired SAA autologous cord blood HSCT should be considered if available before considering unrelated donor HSCT.
