Identification of foodborne pathogens and antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of Alangium salviifolium

Author: MOUNICA SURA, SREENATH KONANKI, SREEYAPUREDDY ANITHA, D.S. RAO, JAYASIMHA RAYALU DADDAM
Abstract: Salmonella enterica is a serious human pathogen and is a causative of salmonellosis. This study was aimed to identify novel foodborne pathogens from chicken samples and phytochemical screening, anti-oxidant, antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract from the leaves of Alangium salvifolium (L.f.). To identify novel bacterial strain, isolation of genomic DNA and 16S rRNA sequence amplification was done. Partial sequencing of 16S rRNA was done to study the novelty of the bacterium. Phytochemicals were identified from the ethanolic extract of A. salvifolium leaves and antioxidant and antibacterial activity was studied. From the results novel foodborne pathogen was identified and named as Salmonella enterica JNTUFT1, the sequence was deposited with accession number ‘LC381855’ in GenBank after characterization. The results indicate that ethanolic extract of A. salvifolium has good inhibitory activity on the foodborne pathogens. This effect of ethanolic extract was assigned due to the presence of phenols, flavonoids and triterpinoids, which are identified as important compounds in the leaf extract of A. salvifolium. The described results indicate that strain Salmonella enterica JNTUFT1is a novel strain of S.enterica species within foodborne pathogens.
