Periodontal disease is a destructive inflammatory pathological condition which affects supporting structures of the teeth, caused by a group of specific microorganisms resulting in progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone leading to tooth loss. The routine periodontal management of mechanical debridement followed by administration of systemic and local drug delivery agents as an adjunct therapy, has its own advantages and disadvantages. Off late, ozone therapy being minimally invasive, painless technique with minimum adverse effects has been introduced in the field of periodontal management hence proving to be more beneficial than the other conventional modalities. Ozone therapy as well has been widely used in other fields of dentistry for the treatment of carious lesions, root canal disinfection and in cases of impaired post-operative healing due to its oxidizing and anti-microbial properties. This literature review aims to provide overview of ozone therapy and its role in periodontics.
