Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma Gondii Infection among Pregnant Women in Al-Anbar Governorate Western of Iraq

Abstract: Across – sectional study was carried out on pregnant woman attending the maternal and Pediatrics Hospital in Ramadi and Fallujah provinces, as well as from General hospital in Heet, Gaiem, Rutbah, Hadeethah and Anah provinces during the period from April 2012 to March 2013 in Al-Anbar governorate. The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Ramadi province was 41.1 % (287/698), in Fallujah was 40.3 % (305/757), in Heet, it was 57.6 % (190/330), in Hadeethah, 21.4 % (28/131); in Gaiem 55.7 % (480/862) and in Rutbah, it was 51.8 % (394/760); meanwhile in Anah province we can’t determine the seroprevalenes of toxoplasmosis because of unavailability of serological kits. The overall prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Al-Anbar governorate was 47.6 % (1684/3538). A total of 3538 blood samples were collected from those pregnant women and tested for detection of IgM and IgG antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii using ELISA technique.
