Identification of Bioactive Compounds from Seeds Oil of Agricultural Waste in Malaysia

Author: SHAKINAZ DESA, ASAAD ABBAS KHALAF, SYARUL NATAQAIN BINTI BAHARUM, MUSTAFA MUDHAFAR
Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the extracted oils from seeds sourcing from the waste of agriculture and to determine the existence of bioactive compounds. Phenol, flavonoid, and a-tocopherol contents were identified in the oils of several plant seeds such as rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), pumpkin (Cucurbita sp), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam), durian (Durio zibethinus), mango (Mangifera indica), papaya (Carica papaya L), which has increased the value of the agro-waste. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-UV technique was used to determine the content of a-tocopherol. Meanwhile, an aluminum chloride approach was used to determine the total content of flavonoid and the total content of phenol was predicted via a colorimetric method that had been modified using Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The outcome revealed that the oils contain a-tocopherol. Seeds oil from A. heterophyllus Lam showed the highest amount of a-tocopherol. The highest content of phenolic was obtained in C. papaya L, while the lowest was in D. zibethinus. The highest flavonoid content was discovered in C. papaya L and the lowest was in Cucurbita sp. In this study, the findings reported the usage of vegetable oils as an alternative to serving as raw material for various industries such as food, chemical, and pharmaceutical.
