Title: Updates on community pharmacists’ involvement in tuberculosis program in Indonesia

Author: SUSI ARI KRISTINA, AMADEA SYLVA LIENANINGRUM, ANNA WAHYUNI WIDAYANTI
Abstract: Background: Pharmacists have pivotal roles in TB prevention and management. To incorporate these positions, pharmacists must understand the importance of their responsibilities, learn enough, and engage in TB prevention and treatment programs. This study aimed to evaluate the involvement of community pharmacists in TB program. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Yogyakarta Province between September and December 2019. Pharmacists working in community settings were invited to participate. The pre-validated questionnaire consisted of socio-demographic information, awareness, and TB treatment and prevention activities. Data presented descriptively. Results: The results of the current study indicated that 96.67% of pharmacists knew that both TB and drug-resistant TB was a serious problem, but only 63.33% of pharmacists knew that sputum testing was an effective diagnostic test for pulmonary TB. Most pharmacists did not have TB-related information in their practice site (62.50%). Community pharmacists' involvement with TB in Yogyakarta is limited to dispensing TB medication (93.33%) and addressing health issues when patients come to the pharmacy (81.67%). Conclusion: Our analysis shows community pharmacists have sufficient TB awareness. However, community pharmacists need to increase their involvement in TB by providing TB-related information in their pharmacies, increasing TB-related activities to improve the clinical outcome of TB patients, and participating in TB prevention.
