Correlation between Serum Bisphenol-A Level, Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH) In a Sample of Iraqi Women with PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women, occurring in approximately one in seven women in reproductive age. The etiology of PCOS remains uncertain but there is increasing evidence towered increase consuming canned food and using plastic containers that contain Bisphenol-A (BPA). Bisphenol-A is an environmental estrogen, considered as a one of the most common industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins, found in polycarbonate plastics which are often used in containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles dental materials. And found in epoxy resins which used to coating the inside of metal products, such as food cans, bottle tops and water supply lines. Bisphenol-A (BPA) can leak to food or beverages from containers that are made with it after exposure to high temperatures and impact human health in various ways, interfere with the production, secretion, transport, action, function, and elimination of natural hormones, may be cause reproductive disorders like infertility and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, breast and prostate cancer, heart disease, asthma, type 2 diabetes, body weight disturbance and affected on fetal brain development. Infants and young children and pregnant women more sensitive to the effects of BPA. The present study was designed to measure the serum BPA levels in PCOS patients and investigate the correlation between this substance and Luteinizing hormone (LH), Follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) levels to clarify the role of BPA in pathogenesis of PCOS. A total of 60 PCOS patients and 30 healthy women, matching in average age and body mass index (BMI), were enrolled in this study. Patients with PCOS and healthy women were attending to AL- Nahrain University High Institute for Infertility Assisted Reproductive Technology, in Baghdad between Septembers / 2018 to December / 2018. Blood samples were aspirated from both groups to measure the serum BPA, LH, FSH levels by using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. The obtained results of serum Bisphenol-A (BPA) levels showed a highly significant elevation (P<0.01) in patients when compared with control group. Also, the results recorded significant elevation (P<0.05) in serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), between patients and control group, while there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. On the other hand, the results declared that there was no significant correlation between serum Bisphenol-A (BPA) levels and luteinizing hormone (LH) and significant inverse correlation with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The findings of the current study showed a significant elevation in serum BPA levels in patients with PCOs when compared with control group and, regarding the correlation among the three studied markers (BPA, LH and FSH), it explain that BPA may play a role in pathogenesis of PCOS by interfering with the value of LH/FSH ratio.
