Evaluation of Joint Hyper mobility Syndrome and its association with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) in Indian context

Author: GANAPATHY SANKAR.U, MONISHA.R, G.GAUTHAM
Abstract: Joint Hyper mobility Syndrome (JHS) is most common among children with developmental coordination disorder, the hyper mobile joints were having enhanced laxity and they were prone for frequent injury as the underlying coordination defect enhances the trouble with moving the hyper mobile joints. Developmental coordination disorder is marked by the hallmark feature of clumsiness and difficulty in motor coordination. This paper examines whether there is an overlap between developmental coordination disorder and joint hyper mobility syndrome and we also aimed to analyze the children with DCD for the symptoms of joint hyper mobility. Questionnaire was used to analyze the symptoms confined for the diagnosis of joint hyper-mobility syndrome and other related symptoms was discussed in detail with the parents of children with developmental coordination disorder. Total number of 20 children with DCD was included in the study and the results were compared with the age matched typically developing peer group children. Results of the current study suggest that not all children with DCD were present with the symptoms of joint hyper mobility. There is no overlap between the diagnosis of joint hyper mobility syndrome and developmental coordination disorder based on their clinical presentation. There is a significant difference between the two diagnosis and the differences were also documented in the questions which are related to hyper mobility, pain and autonomic nervous system changes. However children with DCD and JHS needs appropriate assessment and rehabilitation measures for their symptoms of pain and there is a need to enhance participation in physical activity sessions.
