Luting Agents In Dentistry- A Review

Author: THEIVA CHANDRAN.R, JAYALAKSHMI SOMASUNDARAM, ANJANEYULU. K
Abstract: Luting agents are dental cement that connects the underlying tooth structure to a fixed prosthesis. To lute means to glue two different structures together. Two main purposes of luting agents in dentistry are to secure a cast restoration or fixed prosthodontics to the tooth structure (e.g. for use of retaining of an inlay, crowns, or bridges), and to keep orthodontic bands and appliances in position.Due to the availability of a large number of luting agents (dental cements) proper selection can be a daunting task and is usually based on a practitioner's reliance on experience and preference and less in depth knowledge of materials that are used for the restoration and luting agent properties. This review presents an overview of current permanent luting cements and discusses physical properties, biocompatibility and other properties that make a particular cement the preferred material of choice depending on the clinical indication as well as showcases the advances of luting materials in brief for additional knowledge. This review is intended to guide the practitioner to select the proper luting cements for appropriate scenarios a recommended choice under commonly encountered clinical scenarios.
