Author: VINAYA SWETHA.T, DR.DEEPIKA RAJENDRAN, DR.KIRAN KUMAR PANDURANGAN
Abstract: Cheilitis is a term that describes inflammation of the lip surface characterized by dry scaling and fissuring specific types are atopic, angular, granulomatous and actinic. Angular cheilitis is most commonly seen in primary care settings and it refers to cheilitis that radiates from the corners or commissure of the mouth. Pharmacotherapy depends on the etiology of the disease. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and create awareness among dental students about the significance of angular cheilitis and its pharmacotherapy. This study was carried out in a self administered questionnaire format among the students of Saveetha Dental College, Chennai. The questionnaire was created on an online platform called survey planet and filled by 100 students. The questionnaire consisted of the major aspects of knowledge about angular cheilitis and how students will manage the patients before performing procedures on them. Microsoft excel spreadsheet was used to collect data and later exported to the statistical package for social sciences for windows(SPSS). Based on the tabulated results, it was seen that dental students were not aware and did not have enough knowledge in dealing in patients with angular cheilitis. 36% said that they were aware of angular cheilitis and its pharmacotherapy. 48% students responded that licking sore lips will exacerbate the lesion and 52% disagreed with it. 47% students said their mode of treatment will be corticosteroids and 24% said that they will give vitamin supplement as a treatment modality, 17% of participants reported that they would recommend an antifungal drugs as fungi is the most common etiology, about 9% said that they do not prescribe any drug for angular cheilitis. We can conclude that dental students have only partial knowledge and awareness towards the clinical importance of angular cheilitis. Hence, it is important to create awareness among dental students by conducting awareness health programmes.
