Dentin hypersensitivity is a common clinical condition. It is an exaggerated response to a stimulus due to the exposed dentin regardless of its location. It widely affects people with any age group. The treatment starts with an acute diagnosis followed by differential diagnosis and other causes are excluded. The identification and treatment of the causative factors are always neglected at a certain phase. The hypothesis of the stimuli is due to the various mechanisms involving the pulp. There are various treatment modalities available that can be used at home or professionally applied. The “at home” treatments include the desensitizing like toothpaste, mouthwash or chewing gums. They act by blocking the neural transmission and occluding the dentinal tubules. The in-office treatments include fluorides, oxalates, adhesive materials, propolis, and lasers. This article discusses the various treatment options to reduce the sensitivity in dentin by those desensitizing agents.
