Prevalence Of Pit And Fissure Caries In Male And Female Children

Abstract: Pit and fissure caries exhibit more susceptibility to decay when compared to other surfaces owing to easy entrapment of plaque/food particles in them. They are present in the occlusal surface of posterior teeth and in the lingual surface of anterior teeth. Early diagnosis and intervention in children is important to prevent further progression of decay. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of pit and fissure caries among male and female children. A retrospective study was conducted using the patient records from Saveetha Dental College, Chennai from June 2019 - March 2020. The study population included pediatric patients, selected by non-probability purposive sampling and the prevalence of pit and fissure caries among them was assessed by examining their dental status records. Data was collected and then subjected to statistical analysis. Microsoft Excel 2016 (Microsoft office 10) data spreadsheet was used to collect data and later exported to SPSS IBM (version 20.0). Descriptive statistics and chi square test were employed with a level of significance set at p<0.05. The mean age among the children was 10.34 +/- 4.06 years. 54.85% were males and 45.25% were females. The overall incidence of pit and fissure caries is 19.3%. There is a statistically significant association between age and the prevalence of pit and fissure caries, with a higher prevalence among 6-12 year old children. However, there is no significant association between gender and pit and fissure caries, though there is a male preponderance.
