Background:Odontogenic infections are commonly encountered by dentists for which antibiotics were frequently prescribed. Antibiotics are called double edged swords as it might cause complications such as allergic reactions and its side effects.
Aim:The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice among undergraduate dental students on prescription of Antibiotics in Dentoalveolar Abscess.
Materials and methods:A questionnaire based survey was conducted among 100 dental students. Questionnaire was distributed through a survey link. Results were collected and analysed using IBM SPSS Statistical Analyzer (23.0 version).
Result:The results of the study showed that the knowledge about common antibiotic prescription in day to day practice varied according to their year of study. Overall, the Interns were more aware and knowledgeable on the role of antibiotics and its usefulness and showed statistically significant values p value =0.00 <0.05,Chi square test; when compared to the third years and final years. Conclusion:
Within the limitations of this study, it showed that the Interns were more aware and knowledgeable on the role of antibiotics and its usefulness. Therefore, it showed that there is a need to perform further systematic and extensive research to gain a better understanding regarding the antibiotics, their use and misuses. There is a need to improve awareness of dentists regarding antibiotic prescription to patients particularly in the aspects of type of antibiotics and its clinical indications.
