Quantification of operculectomy procedures performed using laser versus surgical method-an institutional based study

Author: MILONI SURESH SHAH, NASHRA KAREEM, MARAGATHAVALLI GOPAL
Abstract: Operculectomy is the removal of gum overlying a tooth usually seen in case of Wisdom teeth. Surgical operculectomy is less invasive compared to Extraction and has good patient compliance. Laser operculectomy has excellent hemostatic abilities, minimal damage to adjacent healthy tissue. Therefore the aim of the present study was to quantify the operculectomy procedures done using laser and surgical method. This study was conducted in the Department of Periodontics, Saveetha Dental College, Chennai. The study involved 27 patients who were clinically diagnosed with Pericoronitis and required excision of the operculum. There were two different methods of operculectomy: Surgical and Laser method. Pearson chi square test was done to statistically analyze the data and to identify any significant level of association. The highest number of operculectomy procedures were performed using surgical method when compared to that of laser. Out of the total 27 patients involved in the study it was observed that the highest number of operculectomy procedures were performed using conventional/surgical method (n=18;66.7%) when compared to that of laser (n=9;33.3%) More number of surgical operculectomy procedures were performed in both the age groups when compared to Laser operculectomy which was more predominant in patients above 25 years of age(n=13;51.9%).Patients who underwent surgical operculectomy, were more predominant among females, when compared to patients who underwent laser operculectomy. Within the limitations of our study it was observed that operculectomy was performed mostly in patients above 25 years of age with a predominance in females and surgical operculectomy was the most preferred mode of treatment when compared to laser operculectomy. Further studies with a larger sample size are required to compare the efficacy of various modes of treatment for operculectomy procedures.
