Oral Cancer And Association With Forms Of Tobacco Use Among Patients Visiting A Dental Institution In Chennai- A Retrospective Study

Abstract:

Background: Cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx cause more deaths than all other oro-facial diseases and disorders combined, yet they have not always received adequate attention from the medical and dental communities. Proper evaluation of adverse habits and the lesions are necessary to prevent the progression of such lesions.
Methodology: The study was conducted after evaluation of 86,000 patient case sheets between June,2019 -March ,2020) of which 41 casesheets were selected and whose data was collected and tabulated .The inclusion criteria was male or female,oral cancer diagnosis,treatment performed and biopsy reports.The exclusion criteria was incompletely filled data ,improper biopsy reports.Data was analysed using SPSS software and graphs were plotted.
Results: The prevalent use of smokeless tobacco was found to be a major risk factor for oral cancer mainly squamous cell carcinoma of buccal mucosa which is found to be in a majority of males (Chi-square test: p value: 0.023(<0.05).
Conclusion: The study findings suggest that prevalence of oral cancer is high among smokers tobacco users especially among men and there is an urgent need to implement and sustain appropriate preventive measures and oral cancer screening programmes for the community.
