Prevalence Of Vestibular Recession In Mandibular Incisors After Orthodontic Treatment

Can orthodontic tooth movement cause gingival recession or, Does the alveolar bone and gingiva adapt to the new position of the teeth after Orthodontic treatment in the absence of other traumatic factors like vigorous tooth brushing is still a controversial issue. The aim of this study was to analyse the prevalence of vestibular recession in mandibular incisors after orthodontic treatment in a South Indian population visiting a private dental university hospital in Chennai. A total of 138 patients who underwent orthodontic treatment from June 2019 to March 2020 were included in this study. Data was collected from the records maintained in the hospital and was cross verified with the patient’s intraoral photographs. Data was tabulated in excel and then transferred to SPSS. Test for frequency, Chi square test to determine the association of vestibular recession with various parameters was carried out. The study had 55.8% female patients and 44.2% male patients. The frequency of occurrence of vestibular recession post completion of orthodontic treatment showed that 9.4% of the study population was affected. The most commonly affected site was the mandibular left central incisor (5.8%) followed by the mandibular right central incisor (2.9%). A higher prevalence was seen among the female patients (5.8%) and the recession was more common in long term orthodontic therapy (5.07%). It can be concluded that the prevalence of vestibular recession after orthodontic treatment was at 9.4%. There was a significant association between vestibular recession and orthodontic treatment. Recession more commonly occurred in long term treatments (p=0.004). Female patients had a higher prevalence of vestibular recession (p=0.042). Orthodontists should be aware of the prevalence of gingival recession, therefore instruct patients to maintain oral hygiene and they must focus on orthodontic biomechanics to minimise or avoid such errors.
