Tobacco is one of the most important risk factors leading upto periodontitis and oral cancer in the present generation. Its broad utilisation around the world in both the smoking and smokeless form added to the severity of the disease. Tobacco is responsible for almost half of the periodontitis cases worldwide in adults. The retrospective study was conducted among patients who visited an institution in Chennai. The patients records were reviewed and the data of patients who visited between June 2019 to March 2020 were analyzed. 963 tobacco users who visited the institution were included in the study and they were evaluated for periodontitis. Retrospective analysis was done based on the collected data. Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS Software, data was analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics. From our study we were able to notice that Localised chronic periodontitis(62.9%) was the commonly seen periodontal disease among tobacco users, Cigarettes(42.7%) were the most commonly used tobacco product among tobacco users. In the age group 25-45 years Localised chronic periodontitis was the most commonly found periodontal condition. Cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco products. Within the limits of the study we were able to see that there was a high prevalence of periodontitis. Cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among tobacco users. There was a significant correlation between age and the severity of the periodontal disease among the tobacco users (Pearson Chi Square value- 213.092a ,p =0.00). There was a significant association between the tobacco product used and the periodontitis present among tobacco users (Pearson Chi Square value- 142.865a ,p =0.00). From this we were able to see that there was significant correlation on the prevalence of periodontitis song tobacco users.
