Background: Dental caries remains a serious problem in many populations worldwide with a marked increase of prevalence in the last decade. There is minimal data available in literature with regard to caries assessment in primary and permanent mandibular first molar using the ICDAS system.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the caries affecting primary and permanent mandibular first molar in children.
Materials and methods: The data required was collected from patient records of Saveetha dental College .
Results: Totally data of 1021 patients were analysed based on ICDAS - international caries detection and assessment system. Children of age 7 to 8 years were included in the study among which 53.67% were male and 46.33% female.
Conclusion: Most of the subjects had a ‘score 0’ - that is sound tooth surface. Sound tooth surface was seen mostly than the carious surface which suggests that the incidence of caries is decreased predominantly as a result of good oral hygiene practice.
