Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the second most common cancer in India and is more prevalent in South Asian countries. It affects any age group depending upon the risk factors. They are mainly caused due to tobacco and its related products but sometimes may be idiopathic. There are very few studies reporting the association of anemia with OSCC.
Materials and Method: A Retrospective study was conducted in the Oral Oncology and Oral Medicine Department of Saveetha Dental College from June 2019 to March 2020. Case records of 55 patients who were clinically and histopathologically proven as OSCC were reviewed. 15 patients were included in the final study. The data was evaluated and descriptive analysis was done to assess correlation and association.
Results: Predominant age group of study population was 61-70 years (40%), female predilection, most common site left buccal mucosa (13.3%) and right buccal vestibule (13.3%), moderately differentiated OSCC (66.1%) and T1N0M0 (20%), T1N1M0 (20%) was more commonly reported. No tobacco habits or other risk factors were present in the study group. The RBC and Hemoglobin was reduced and moderately differentiated carcinoma was associated with decreased hematological parameters.
Conclusion: Anemia can be a predisposing risk factor for OSCC. TNM staging, histopathological grading increases with decrease in Hb concentration and RBC count.
