Background: Local anesthesia (LA) with vasoconstrictor agents have many benefits but many dentists are apprehensive in using LA with vasoconstrictors in patients with cardiac disorders as they may cause adverse effects. Aim of the study is to assess the effectiveness of LA with and without adrenaline in patients with cardiac disorders.
Materials and Method: A retrospective study of 54 patients with a history of cardiac disorders who have undergone extractions from June 2019 to march 2020 where included. 27 patients (group 1) were administered local anesthesia with adrenaline and 27 patients (group 2) were administered local anesthesia without adrenaline and pain response was assessed using VAS.
Results: Age group of the study population was 61 to 70 years(42.6%), M : F = 61.1% : 38.9% , commonest cardiac disorder prevalent is ischemic disease with hypertension (24.1%). VAS which was observed between group 1 and 2 was significant (P<0.05)
Conclusion: Recent evidence states the local anesthesia with vasoconstrictors is not contraindicated in cardiac patients when used in safe concentrations. Endogenous catecholamines produced are more than exogenously administered catecholamines. This study concludes that LA with adrenaline decreases the quantity of LA being used and has better effectiveness and less pain is experienced by the patients.
