Aim: To evaluate patients diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) in a private dental college
Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who visited the Department of Oral Medicine from June 2019 to March 2020. Case sheets of patients who presented with a chief complaint of burning sensation and had limited clinical findings were reviewed. The details of each case were retrieved from an electronic database.
Results:15 patients diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome were included in the study. From our study we found that BMS predominantly affected the middle age between 40-50 years(37.5%) with a slight female predilection. On clinical examination the predominant clinical findings observed were generalised chronic gingivitis (31.3%) and generalised chronic periodontitis(31.3%).
Conclusion: The patients who received vitamin B supplement therapy and alpha lipoic acid for management of BMS showed a minimal post treatment VAS scores of 2 and 3 comparatively. Hence when compared to topical anaesthetics and tricyclic antidepressants, the vitamin B supplemental therapy and alpha lipoic acid are more effective in the treatment of BMS.
