Candidiasis Associated with Steroid Therapy in Oral Lichen Planus Patients Visiting A Private Dental Institution

Abstract:

Aim: To determine the incidence of candidiasis in patients with oral lichen planus who are under topical corticosteroids therapy.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who visited the Department of Oral Medicine from june 2019 to march 2020.Case records 25 of patients who were diagnosed with oral lichen planus and under corticosteroid therapy were reviewed and details were collected from an electronic database.Chi-square test was used to assess the correlation between the long term corticosteroid therapy and candidiasis.
Results: Out of 25 patients included in the study there was candidiasis in 6 patients,who had received topical corticosteroid therapy for more than 3 months.There was a statistically significant association between long term topical corticosteroid therapy and candidiasis.
Conclusion: Long term (>3 months) corticosteroids therapy enhances the development of candidiasis and the associated risk factors are age, medication use and underlying systemic disease such as hypertension, diabetes.
