Different Treatment Options for A Distal Extension Case: A Retrospective Study

Author: AMAN MERCHANT, SUBHABRATA MAITI, VISALAKSHI RAMANATHAN
Abstract: Distal extension cases are one of the common types of cases encountered during clinical practice. There are various treatment options available for distal extension cases, like Cast partial dentures, implants, Cantilever crowns etc. The clinician should evaluate the patient’s condition and decide as to which treatment option would give the best results possible. The objective of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of different treatment options for distal extension cases. This retrospective study was carried out from the data obtained from the DIAS. A total of 96 subjects were selected, having teeth present till second premolars on both sides and undergoing treatment for missing molars on both sides. The prevalence of three different treatment options were evaluated. Group 1: Cast Partial Dentures, Group 2: Implant supported Prosthesis, Group 3: Cantilever molars, Group 4: No treatment (Shortened dental arch). It was found that in the young and middle aged population, the patients preferred implant supported prosthesis, whereas, in geriatric patients, more cast partial treatment was done. Number of implant supported prosthesis were more in female patients and the number of cast partial dentures were seen more in male patients. More number of implant supported prosthesis was seen in lower jaws than in upper jaws. Apart from short end dental arch, all other treatment protocols were done more in the lower jaw in comparison to the upper jaw. There was a significant difference in the treatments with respect to age. Mostly, the patients underwent treatment with cast partial dentures and implant supported prosthesis for distal extension cases.
