Assessment of impacted third molars in patients with temporomandibular disorders

Abstract: Temporomandibular disorders(TMD) are defined as a collective term embracing a number of clinical problems involving the TMJ, masticatory muscles, or both.Impacted third molar has the ability to cause occlusal disharmony which inturn could be one of the etiological factor of temporomandibular disorder.The aim of this study was to assess the impacted third molars with age,gender,types of temporomandibular joint disorders. This study is a university set up study conducted in saveetha dental College Chennai. A retrospective study with a sample size of 52 TMDs patients were included. Data collection was done from 86,000 patients reports who came for various dental treatments between the period of June 2019 to March 2020.The collected data were grouped based on their age,gender,type of TMDs and impacted third molars and data was analysed by chi-square test.Most common age group with impacted third molars was 31 to 40 years(46.1%).Male patients 51.92% was most common compared to female patients 48.08%.Right TMD was more prevalent than left TMDs (57.69% versus 42.31%).Right side impacted third molars was more common than left side impacted third molars among TMD patients showing statistically significant difference between the impacted third molar and TMDs p- 0.000(P<0.05), statistically significant).Within the limitation of the current study it was observed that TMD and impacted third molars is most prevalent in the age group of 31 to 40 years and males are most commonly affected. Clicking sound 42.31% was a classical sign and symptom of TMD. It was also observed that right impacted third molars was more common in disc condyle disorder of TMD.
