Knowledge, attitude and practice among dentists on the factors causing failure of post & core restoration in endodontically treated teeth - a questionnaire-based survey

Author: SOWMYA K, SURENDAR SUGUMARAN
Abstract: The restoration of endodontically treated teeth has always been challenging. In order to achieve success and considerably favourable outcome, one has to be aware of the factors causing failure of endodontically treated teeth. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of the dentists on the reasons for failure of post and core in endodontically treated teeth. A cross sectional questionnaire study consisting of 16 questions under the heading of knowledge, attitude and practice were circulated through google forms and the responses were collected and analysed. All the data was compiled and tabulated in Microsoft Excel and exported to IBM SPSS version 20.0. Data was represented through frequency distribution tables and Chi square tests performed with the level of significance at 0.05 for the comparison between the general dental practitioners (GDPs), post graduate students and other speciality dentists.. There was no statistical significance (p>0.05) seen among GDPs, post graduate students and other speciality dentists on various analysed factor, which emphasises on the need for improving the quality of basic education.Within the limitations of this study, the knowledge on the factors causing failure of post and core was considerably poor and thus improvement of basic education is emphasised.Though most of the participants were aware of the uses of posts and cores and also uses them in their daily practice ,there is no adequate knowledge on the techniques to counteract the failures which could be enhanced by process of continued upgradation on the recent advances in dentistry.
