Thyroid dysfunction is the second most common glandular disorder of the endocrine system which may have
effects on any system in the body including the mouth. The oral cavity is adversely affected by either an excess
or deficiency of these hormones. Any alteration in the function of endocrine glands may induce periodontal
alterations. This study aims to study the prevalence and analyse an association between hypothyroidism and
periodontal health. A retrospective study was performed among patients visiting a private dental hospital, who
reported with a history of hypothyroidism. The results were tabulated and statistical analysis was performed.
Among 188 patients; 86% of the sample were females and only 14% were male. There was an association
between hypothyroidism and periodontal disease. No significant difference was observed among males and
females with a history of periodontal disease in the extent of periodontal disease (p>0.05). More than 50% of
the patients with a history of hypothyroidism were observed to have gingivitis.
