Chronic gingivitis is a common disease affecting the periodontal tissues and oral hygiene status is said to influence
the occurrence of chronic gingivitis. The aim of the study was to identify the relationship between chronic
gingivitis and oral hygiene status. The study was a retrospective study. The data regarding the prevalence of
chronic gingivitis and the oral hygiene status, were obtained from the case records of the patients who reported
to Saveetha Dental College between June 2019 to March 2020. The data was analysed using SPSS software (
version 20.0 ) and chi square analysis was done to find out the relationship between the different oral hygiene
status and the occurrence of chronic gingivitis. From the present study it was evident that, the prevalence of
generalised chronic gingivitis was found to be 6.19% and the prevalence was maximum among the 21 to 30 years
age group which was 2.6%. Among patients with chronic gingivitis, the majority of the study population had good
oral hygiene status. The patients with good oral hygiene status were more in the 21 to 30 years age group (
24.35% ), where the prevalence of gingivitis was also more. As the age increases the proportion of patients
with good oral hygiene status decreases and the prevalence of gingivitis also decreases ( p value 0.002 -
statistically significant)
