Prevalence of fluorosis in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment- a retrospective study

Author: ASHFAQ AHMED M, SRIRENGALAKSHMI, SARAVANA DINESH.S.P
Abstract: Excessive fluoride in water causes metabolic alterations in the ameloblasts resulting in decalcification of teeth. Fluorosis in orthodontic patients can compromise the bond strength of the brackets. Patients who are willing to undergo orthodontic treatment are advised to undergo defluoridation procedures like bleaching before orthodontic treatment. Thus the aim of the study was to analyse the prevalence of fluorosis in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. A retrospective analysis was done using dental archiving software present in saveetha dental college where 700 patients intraoperative photographs were checked for cross verification and the results were analysed and tabulated using chi square test. Within the limits of the study, it can be observed that patients who have fluorosis and also have undergone orthodontic treatment belong to the age group of 10- 25 years (56.25%) than other age groups and males (81.25%) were commonly affected than females. Thus it is important that dentists advise the patients with fluorosis to undergo defluoridation procedures prior to orthodontic treatment to prevent debonding of brackets and decalcification during the treatment.
