Estimation of scaling done during the course of fixed orthodontic treatment - A retrospective study

Author: VUNNAM SAI CHARAN, NASHRA KAREEM, KIRAN KUMAR
Abstract: At present, with the development of medical technology and the improvement of standard of living, people pay more attention to the appearance of their periodontal health status. Fixed orthodontic treatment is still the best choice for the various types of malocclusions. The main aim of this study was to estimate if scaling was done for patients during the course of fixed orthodontic treatment. The data samples were collected from the records of Saveetha dental college. This study included 16 patients who underwent fixed orthodontic treatment from the period of June 2019 to March 2020. The values and variables were tabulated and analysed using the SPSS software. With regard to gender distribution 3 males and 13 females had undergone fixed orthodontic treatment. It was found that out of the 16 patients who underwent fixed orthodontic treatment, only 6 patients underwent scaling; whereas 10 patients did not undergo scaling during the course of treatment. On analysing the association between scaling procedures and gender, it was found that 5 females and 1 male had undergone scaling; whereas 8 females and 2 males did not undergo scaling during the course of orthodontic treatment. From the present study it has been concluded that most of the patients did not undergo scaling during the course of fixed orthodontic treatment. These results can be useful for generating hypotheses for future research in order to create awareness about the importance of periodontal health and maintenance. Further long term studies with larger sample size are required to enhance the effectiveness of periodic periodontal maintenance during orthodontic treatment.
