Prevalence of commonest form of cleft lip in patients reported to a university hospital setting - a retrospective analysis

Abstract: Cleft lip and cleft palate are the one of the most common congenital deformity affecting the world community.It is the second common deformity after club foot.These cleft lip and palate deformities not only causes functional and cosmetic problems for the patient but also have an psychosocial effect in patients as well as parents too.In India, it is more common among lower socioeconomic groups.So the aim of our study is to assess the prevalence of the commonest form of cleft lip in Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals.This study is a Retrospective study conducted in University hospital setting. The study population consists of 35 patients with cleft lip who had reported to the Cleft and Craniofacial Centre,Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai, India. The data regarding the age, gender, type of cleft lip and clinical presentation of the patients were retrieved from patients records and analysed .The data with a total 86000 patients records between June2019 to March 2020 were taken and after fulfillment of inclusion and exclusion criteria,a final sample of 35 patients were considered.The data were tabulated and analysed by SPSS software and statistics done using Chi Square test with significance kept at p<0.05.It was observed that unilateral cleft lips (22.9%) were more common than bilateral cleft lips (17.1%)with male predominance. Majority of the study population was dominated by males than females.Our study showed a higher prevalence of unilateral cleft lips than bilateral cleft lips with a male predominance.
