Tooth discoloration can be defined as either intrinsic or extrinsic on the basis of localization and etiology and
discoloration of root filled teeth is usually associated with trauma or destructive carious processes. Bleaching of
nonvital teeth dates back to before the 19th century. As the demand for aesthetic smiles is increasing, more of the
population is looking forward to non invasive options which can enhance their esthetic profile. The purpose of this
study was to evaluate the initial shades of discoloured teeth amongst patients who opted for non vital bleaching. A
total of 61 patients were assessed and reviewed with the usage of vita classic shade guide. It was found that in
females, A3.5 shade in 6.56% whereas, in males, A4 shade in 19.67% was the most prevalent shade[(Pearson's Chisquare value: 26.409, df : 10 and p-value: 0.003(p<0.005) and was statistically significant. In the age group 19-30 yrs,
A4 shade in 18.03% was the most prevalent shade. For age group 31-44 yrs, all four shades A2,A3,A3.5 and A4
were equally prevalent in the 3.28% population. In the age group 45+yrs also four shades A2, A3, A4 and C4 were
equally prevalent [(Pearson's Chi-square value: 11.990, df : 20 and p-value: 0.916 (p>0.05)]and it showed no
association of initial shade and age making them statistically insignificant. Although some relapse of the lightening
effect occurs eventually following the original bleaching treatment, loss of the lighter color appears to be gradual
for most patients and thus the longevity of the lightening effect should be determined.
