Introduction: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is common in the pregnant women and this is ranged from lower urinary tract infection, which is asymptotic bacteriuria and acute cystitis to upper urinary tract infections, which is acute pyelonephritis, and effect of treatment of UTI on both mother and fetus is the biggest challenge. Escherichia coli bacteria belong to the family called Enterobacteriaceae which is a most pathogenic agent of this infection during period of pregnancy.
Methods: We did a study of 63 urine samples collect from pregnant women with urinary tract infection, these samples for isolation and identification of gram negative bacteria, as well as to study of antibiotic activity against these bacteria.
Results: This study shows identifying the most common agent is Escherichia coli with 83.334% while the less common agents are Pseudomonas spp and Enterobacter cloacae are both with 8.333%. Testing of antibiotic activity against E. coli shows the Chloramphenicol, Gentamycin, Amikacin, Imipenem and Amoxiclave have no resistance equal to 0%, while the antibiotics Clindamycin, Oxacillin, Erythromycin, Ceftazidime and Ampicillin have high resistance equal to 100%.
