The role of ultrasound in the diagnosis of non-traumatic acute abdomen

A prospective study was carried out to show the role of ultrasound examination in the diagnosis of acute abdomen, in Sader medical city, Najaf City, Iraq, between November2017 and August2019.The study included 200 cases with symptoms and signs of acute abdomen were scanned by ultrasound and a decision for operation was made, with exclusion of traumatic cases and those treated conservatively. The patients were categorized into 6 major groups according to operative findings and the ultrasound results compared with the surgical findings were evaluated. The overall accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosis of appendicitis was76.3%, in gynecological disease; 91.4% in intestinal obstruction 86.6%, in perforated viscous 100%, in liver and biliary cases 96.2%, and in miscellaneous diseases was 74.8%. The overall accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosis of acute abdomen was 87.5%. The results were discussed in comparison with other studies in other places of the world. In conclusion emergency abdominal ultrasound is very useful in evaluation of patient presented with acute abdomen.
