Abstract:

Dementia with Lewy body (DLB) the second most ranking degenerative disorder, which was identified by Fritz Jacob Heinrich Lewy as eosinophilic intra-neuronal inclusion bodies. The incident rate of DLB as reported is 3.5 cases per one lakh people per year. The pathology of DLB is mainly caused due to alpha-synuclein neuronal inclusions i.e. lewy bodies, but the substrata pathology might often be mixed. The overlapping, mutation, over-expression of the genetic data also plays role in this aspect, GBA, SNCA, LRRK2, SCARB2, APOE2 and the newly identified CNTN1 genes have certain role in the disease progression. The diagnostic methods to assess the cognitive functions and methods to differentiate DLB from other cognitive disorders are also included. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies are reviewed along with their merits and demerits. In this review article we collectively given brief pathology and its genetics along with various diagnostic methods and therapies currently available.
